Bashir and myself (James) have now completed training to help us in our work as Trade Union Learning Reps. Now the course work is finished and we have passed the assessment we will be working together to promote "life long learning" and training for all staff, members and non members alike. We hope to work with our employer to help identify training and skills opportunities, and check what peoples interests are to find out what can be done to assist both staff and our employer. I feel sure that particularly given DWP's investment in new IT and computer systems there is much to be gained for both sides to get involved.

The technological rush that has sparked change throughout business can bring benefits to all. New skills and potential certification for staff (DWP are already looking to change from National Vocational Qualifications to more widely accepted BTEC) and a better trained highly skilled workforce for our employer, are advantages for all.

Although we have gone through a period of rapid change already, better training and learning opportunities can only add to our effectiveness. It can help provide a better service for customers, and equip us to cope better with the inevitability of further change. We hope to have more details as things develop. If you have any questions feel free to contact Bash or myself in the union room on floor 6.
